What Happens During a Root Canal?

Several steps are required when undergoing a root canal. Once you have received local anesthesia from Dr. Hamad, he will:
- Use a dental dam to protect the tooth from any additional moisture, ensuring the area remains dry.
- Make a small hole in the crown of the tooth and begin to clear away damaged and decayed portions of the inner layers.
- Thoroughly sterilize the chambers and canals of the tooth as well as remove the pulp.
- Apply a biocompatible substance known as gutta-percha before sealing off the tooth.
- Take impressions of your mouth so that a customized dental crown can be made and placed over the tooth.
- Place a temporary crown, which you will wear while your permanent one is being made.
